Replacing your kitchen cupboard doors is a cheap and easy way to spruce up the look of your kitchen. Follow these 7 simple steps to replace kitchen cupboard doors easily and effectively.
1. Make sure you have everything you need
The essentials are:
- New cupboard doors/hinges
- Screwdriver
- Drill
- Pencil
- Screw hole filler
2. Locate the hinges
The first thing you’ll need to do is locate the hinges on your existing cupboard doors. The location will depend on the design, and will either be hidden from view inside the cupboard, or clearly visible outside.
3. Remove your existing kitchen cupboard doors.
Once you’ve located the hinges that attach the doors to the cupboards, use the screwdriver to remove the screws that are holding the door in place. If your new cupboard doors are compatible with the old hinges, you can leave the screws that attach the hinges to the cupboard. If your new cupboard doors require a different type of hinge, then simply remove all the screws from the old hinge and take it off completely. Take care to support the doors while removing the hinges, otherwise they have a tendency to swing loose and whack you on the foot, or worse!
3. Ask someone to help you
The next task is to hold the new doors in place while lining them up properly, which can be a little tricky on your own. It’s best to ask for an extra pair of hands at this stage.
4. Mark the location of the new screw holes
Ask your helper to hold the new cupboard doors in place, while you mark the position of the screw holes with the pencil. You’ll need to mark the screw holes on the new doors, and if you’re using new hinges, you’ll also have to mark screw holes where the new hinge will attach to the cupboard.
5. Drill the new screw holes
Drill holes at your marked locations on the cupboards and doors where required.
6. Attach the hinges
If you are using new hinges, attach them to the cupboards and then the doors. If you are using the existing hinges, you’ll just need to attach the new doors. Test the doors to make sure that they swing open without obstruction, and then ensure the screws are nice and tight.
7. Fill any visible old screw holes
If any of the old screw holes can be seen, use the filler to plug them and then sand over and paint to your satisfaction.
