Corner Kitchen Sinks

A sink is a sink, surely?

Not exactly, no. There are all sorts of variations on this theme including the material your sink is made from, how many bowls it has, whether or not there is a draining board and for some people the crucial question is: how much room does it take up? Many kitchens are compact and difficult to negotiate. A corner kitchen sink can be an attractive, practical, space-saving solution.

Won’t it be a headache moving my sink from a side worktop to the corner?

If you’re remodelling your kitchen you’ll be buying new worktops anyway, so your current sink-space will disappear with no problems. Moving your sink to the corner might mean extending your hot and cold water pipes and possibly your waste system, if you have one. A DIY enthusiast should be able to carry this out themselves; otherwise it’s a pretty straightforward job for a plumber. Alternatively, you can just pay for installation when you buy the sink.

Won’t it be cramped when I’m washing up?

Not really. In a right-angled corner the surfaces either side are closer to you as you wash up, so you might find it more convenient. Also, putting the sink in the corner frees up other work surfaces in the rest of the kitchen, so you’ll have much more elbow room while cooking; you can start throwing your ingredients around like a proper chef.

What are the options when it comes to buying a corner kitchen sink?

You have many of the same things to consider as when you buy a conventional sink. Do you integrate the material into the rest of the kitchen? For example using marble or granite? Or do you go with stainless steel for that modern look? Or perhaps something warmer, like a plastic finish. Then you face the same questions about whether to have one or two bowls and one or two draining surfaces. It’s worth taking your time to decide – you’ll be surprised how much of a feature a corner sink is in your kitchen; it’s worth getting it right.
