Kitchen Tiles Top 10

If you're feeling a bit unsure about your kitchen tiles and need advice on; colours, material types, and other tile related information then reading our top 10 tips will help put you on the right path.

1. Do I need kitchen tiles?

Nowadays kitchen design is not only about what you need, but also what you want. Kitchen tiles offer many positives that make them a very worthwhile investment. The main positive aspect is how easy to clean they are.  For those of you who like to cook, you'll understand how tough it can be to get pasta sauce splashes out of painted walls! Need becomes want, however, when considering colour schemes and tile design, and kitchen tiles come in a huge variety, enough to satisfy almost any style.

2. Kitchen tile materials

There are many types of kitchen tile materials available, varying in function, style, and price. The type of tile you choose will depend on the style and practical needs of your kitchen. Mixing and matching tiles has also become popular for creating added impact. Kitchen tile types include:

  • Ceramic - this is the most cost effective type of tile and can be found in various colours and styles.
  • Stone tiles - natural stone tiles work excellently on the floor of the kitchen, these may cost a little more but will last an extremely long time.
  • Quarry tiles - recently these have had a resurrection with many people choosing to seal them (as they can be quite porous) to include them in kitchen top tiles.
  • Glass tiles - these are a real favourite at the moment because they can be used on backsplash areas, around sinks and as borders.

3. Kitchen tile texture/finish

Using a variety of tile textures can also work to the advantage of your kitchen. There are few to choose from so consider what they will bring to the kitchen and how will they match the items you have.
Tiles textures vary and include:

  • Matt finish - this enhances the kitchen tile giving it natural colour and texture. The only downfall is that it can chip easily.
  • Silk or Gloss tiles - these are great for the kitchen wall as they sparkle and will really set the look of the kitchen.  If you use them on the floor be careful, the glossier the tile the more slippery it becomes.
  • Porcelain tile - Porcelain tiles are not coated like the matt or gloss tiles. If it chips it is the same colour underneath and can be a real money saver in the long term, these are great for kitchen floor tiles.

4. Kitchen tile colour

The colour of your kitchen tiles is an important consideration when selecting them for your home. Have a think about the impact the colour has on the kitchen space. How do the tile colours fit with the other colours found in your kitchen? Using dark coloured tiles as flooring creates the impression of a larger space, and contrasting the colours of the tiles to the colours of your units and walls gives an immediate visual impact.

5. Kitchen tile size

Kitchen tiles can be cut, amended and slotted into any needed space, so it's important to plan properly where they are going before you start snipping!

6. Grouting

There are two main points to consider with regards to grouting. Firstly, at some point it may need to be replaced to ensure no damage is done, but regularly cleaning it should stop endless replacing. Secondly, the colour of the grouting is important. If you choose one that matches the tile then a seamless look can be achieved, but choosing grouting that is a stark contrast can highlight any errors made.

7. Kitchen Floor tiles

Consider the amount of time you spend in the kitchen and the amount of pressure that gets placed on the floor. Floor tiles really need to be durable to ensure they do not need to be replaced regularly. Choose a material that will allow you to clean spills easily and handle the weight of items such as plant pots. Glass tiles are not ideal as they can easily break. Similarly, glazed tiles can be hazardous as they can become very slippery when wet.

9. Countertop kitchen tiles

When choosing your countertop tiles keep in mind the need for something durable, heat resistant, non-porous and easy to clean as well. These tiles will get a lot of use and ensuring they stay pretty will make your kitchen look well cared for and inviting.

10. DIY tiles and maintenance.

Doing them yourself is a great way to cut costs and gain a real sense of achievement. It won't always be a quick job, but take a look at our DIY tips on how to install kitchen tiles. Buying extra tiles would be advantageous. Having extras for tiles that may chip and need replacing will save you time and money in the long run.
