Flipdown TV

How do I install it?

Installing a flip down kitchen TV is straightforward; they usually fix into place with four or six screws. This does mean that you need a drill, so if this is a problem there are plenty of companies around who will install it for you. But save your pennies if you can; a DIY savvy friend or relative will take ten minutes and cost you the price of a cup of tea.

Is it very expensive?

A flip down kitchen TV is not a necessity for most people, so it really depends how much you value this luxury item. For the size of screen you will probably pay a lot more for a flip down TV than a normal TV. Like any other luxury item you can get the very best and spend a fortune. But prices start at a relatively modest £250 for the basic models.

Do I have to stand in one place to watch it?

Most flip down kitchen TVs can swivel so that you will be able to watch TV anywhere in the room.

My kitchen is a very humid place; does this matter?

It’s true that you should take care with electrical appliances in the kitchen. This is generally not a problem, but if you are concerned there are flip down kitchen TVs on the market which are waterproof.

Will it withstand water being splashed on it?

Again, if you go for a waterproof model, then yes. If not then take care with your TV. Most importantly, flip down kitchen TVs are generally supplied with a waterproof remote control.

Can I watch DVDs on it?

If you were to bring a normal DVD player into the kitchen that would defeat the point of having a flip down TV. Happily though, many models of flip down kitchen TV are available with built in DVD players. These will, of course, also play music from a CD. And, given that most people have a radio in their kitchen, there are plenty of flip down TVs that include digital radio, thereby saving you even more space.

Where should I install it?

Consider first of all when you are likely to be watching it. If you want to escape what’s on the living room TV and relax at the kitchen table, make sure it will swivel in that direction. If you want a bit of TV while washing up, put in your sight line from the sink. Depending on your kitchen you might also consider a splashback TV (on the wall behind your hob) or one that can be set into your cupboard doors. It really depends on the sight lines in your kitchen. And whoever does the most cooking gets the casting vote!

What channels can I get on it?

Most of the flip down kitchen TVs come with freeview. Which may be all you need, but if you want your full satellite package, you may be able to get a multiroom deal with your current supplier. Bear in mind though that many flip down kitchen TVs do not have SCART connectors, so check with your provider what kind of connector you need first. There are also additional bits of kit you can buy that will transmit whatever is showing in your living room to the TV in your kitchen. But if you want the extra TV to avoid arguments over what to watch, this defeats the point.
